Off The Record: Working On His New Album “Same Truck” Scotty McCreery Felt Like A Child Again

“Well, we had a album that was almost ready to release… but we had nothing more than a year, a year and a half to sit down with a guitar, write songs and come up with ideas, ”Scotty McCreery said in the last episode by American Songwriter’s Off The Record. “We removed most of the discs that were ready in advance and created a brand new disc called Same truck. “

Since I won American Idol in 2011, McCreery can’t remember a time when he had more free time than last year in quarantine… and the extra space for creativity certainly shows on the liner of the 12 country tunes. Same truck. From the hit single “You Time” to the mid-tempo swagger of a track like “Why You Gotta Be Like That”, you can tell that not only is the 28-year-old artist at the top of his game, but he ‘s also a lot of fun.

“I started doing all of this when I was 16… I haven’t had time like this at home since I was 15! McCreery reflects. “So I was upstairs in my bedroom playing guitar like I was a kid again. I hadn’t done this for a long time. It made me love it all again, you know? I have to write songs that are really close to my heart – you are in a little different space, going through a global pandemic. “

Yet as he drew on some of the childhood wonders that inspired him to start playing music as a child, McCreery’s version reflected on Same truck is certainly an older and more mature artist. “This record is really me sitting back – like we all had to do last year – and taking that view 30,000 feet from everything,” he explained. “To be grateful for the little things, the things I learned, as a man and as a husband. I think it clearly shows from the perspective of writing a lot of this album. “

Beyond that, McCreery also spoke about the inspiration behind “You Time”, the unifying power of music, the impact American Idol had on his art, and much more.
